Gap Academy

 

The Academic Programme

The Gap Academic Programme follows the official guidelines written by the Ontario Ministry of Education. Textbooks are selected from those listed in Circular 14, a Ministry listing of required and suggested texts. Additionally, we also use textbooks that have been used successfully by teachers of the LD population, as well as excellent texts which are not part of Circular 14, (e.g. Grammar Is Important), but are nonetheless excellent texts for any student.

Subjects taught are as follows:

Language

In addition to the sections mandated by the provincial government, we also include: Phonics, Spelling, Independent Reading, Grammar, Comprehension, Creative Writing, Literature Study, Poetry, Oral Speaking, Verbal and Written Presentation, Vocabulary Development, Literary History.

Mathematics

Ontario Curriculum specified. In addition to the sections mandated by the provincial government, we also include: time, money exchange, cash value, verbal math.

Visual Arts

In addition to the sections mandated by the provincial government, we also include: Creative Art, Photography, Art Appreciation, Art History, Creative Expression.

Technology Studies

In addition to the sections mandated by the provincial government, we also include: Computer Science, Business Studies, Logical Thought, Keyboarding.

Physical Education

In addition to the sections mandated by the provincial government, we also include: Skating, Swimming, Outdoor co-operative sports, Skiing, Fitness Study.

Social Studies

Contemporary Studies, Man In Society, Physical Geography, Global Geography, Canadian History, European History, Western Civilization, The Renaissance.

Music

In addition to the sections mandated by the provincial government, we also include: Music Appreciation, Piano Instruction, Guitar Instruction, Music Theory, Lyrics, Music History, Reading Music.

Science

In addition to the sections mandated by the provincial government, we also include: Life Science, Earth Science, Space Science, Physical Science, Biology & Health, Environmental Science.

Personal Skills

LD Survival Skills, Personal Awareness, Risk-taking, Independence, Academic Determination, Initiation, Motivation, Study Skills, Organizational Skills, Self-esteem, Self-confidence, LD Awareness, Ego Awareness, Independent Homework Skills.

N.B. Exact course load may vary year to year and will vary from student to student and from term to term. Due to Ministry allowances for French exemptions, at this time, we are not offering French.
